At some points, it felt like the oral stories shared between generations of the family took on a life of their own! It was fun to be immersed in the family’s ancestral stories as we tried to make connections between the family’s past and present. The art of storytelling & oral tradition plays a role in the book. Ellie tells her family that she suspects foul play in the death of her cousin, and her parents immediately believe her! They commit to helping her find the answers she seeks.

It isn’t often that I read a YA in which the protagonist has his/her/their parents’ full support. The family dynamic in this book is uplifting. While I ultimately rated this book a 3.5 (and not the 5 stars I anticipated), I would absolutely encourage other folks to give it a try.

If you like vampires, friendly ghosts, and a ragtag team of heroes- this just might be the book for you! While the book does discuss tough topics like grief/loss and the historical mistreatment of marginalized communities, I found the book to be a perfect balance of whimsical and poignant. Her family has passed down to her the ability to raise the ghosts of dead animals, and she hopes to use her gifts to right a history of wrongs. After he visits her in a dream, she becomes determined to help him get the justice he deserves. The story follows Ellie, who receives word one night that her beloved cousin has died under strange circumstances. I was excited to read a book featuring Asexual/Ace representation that also happened to offer own voices Lipan Apache (Native American) representation!

So many booktubers and bookstagrammers that I admire were singing this book’s praises, so I was over the moon when it finally arrived on my doorstep! The cover (both with and without its dust jacket) is absolutely stunning, and the illustrations within the book are gorgeous too. I started reading Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger during Indig-A-Thon-and I had extraordinarily high expectations. “History is intrinsically malleable… It’s carried in our minds, our records.
